Team USA already has four casualties from the Classic.
- Chipper Jones – strained oblique
- Dustin Pedroia – abdominal strain
- Ryan Braun – lower rib cage
- Matt Lindstrom – sore throwing shoulder
This is silly business, and why on earth are clubs agreeing to let its players participate???
Yes, injuries are part of the game, but there’s also a reason players go to Spring Training: to warm up for the season.
The Classic isn’t warm-up baseball, these guys are passionate about repping their counties and they play like it.
Then come the injuries…some big, others small, but all costly to that player’s organization.
Think the Cubs get off to the start they should without Big Geo? Think the pen’ survives had Marmol returned with a tattered elbow?
Not a chance.
The kids would care enough to play as a team and win; and look no further than the Netherlands success.
Problem is, the risk of playing in the WBC far outweighs the reward…the money, the glory, the fame, it all revolves around the World Series, not some hokey tournament.
MLB is doing its best to cram this Classic down our throats; thing is, we just don’t care.
And for those of you who do, that all ends when your team’s big star limps home injured.
I’m not saying get rid of the Classic, just keep MLB players off the rosters.
