Chicago Cubs Top Ten

By bullpenbrian - December 17, 2009 - 1:00 am Leave a comment.

Here’s the list of the 10 best Cubs players during the last decade according to ESPNChicago.com.

  • 10. Mark DeRosa
  • 9. Mark Prior
  • 8. Ryan Theriot
  • 7. Moises Alou
  • 6. Sammy Sosa

Mike Cameron Not A Cub

By bullpenbrian - December 16, 2009 - 1:00 am Leave a comment.

–The Cubs have struck out looking this offseason.

Jim Hendry has whiffed on signing the top-two available centerfielders. First Curtis Granderson and now Mike Cameron, who signed a two year deal with Boston Tuesday.

Very frustrating, obviously, with centerfield a priority and the Cubs standing pat in favor of guys like Coco Crisp, Marlon Byrd, Scott Podsednik and Rick Ankiel: none of which I’d like to see suiting up for the Cubs.

But seeing as how that’s all that’s left to choose from I’ll take them in the order listed above.

Ryan Dempster’s House For Sale

Riddle me this Cubs fans. Which will go first, Milton Bradley or Ryan Demspter’s 13-room mansion in Lakeview (Wrigleyville)?

The pitcher’s pad is on the block for $2.25 million, which is just a touch out of my price range…only by about $2 million or so, but check out the place anyway:

Bradley Bomb Is Ticking

By bullpenbrian - December 14, 2009 - 1:00 am Leave a comment.

Maybe today’s the day Milton becomes a Tampa Bay Ray? It appears that’s the only legit option left on the table for Hendry anyway.

I’ve said all along the Cubs should take Burrell in exchange for Bradley. So what if Burrell doesn’t fit the Cubs roster, which he doesn’t, that’s not the point. You eat most of Bradley’s contract, flip Burrell for low-level prospects and move on.

Letting this circus drag on is the last thing the Cubs wanted, but is exactly what’s happening. Not to mention, with each passing day Hendry losses leverage.

Another idle week of chit-chat and it’s likely the Cubs release Milton, eat all of the $21 million still owed on his contract and get nothing in return. And that bomb, like Bradley, is ticking.

Cubs Need Dope On The Table

By bullpenbrian - December 11, 2009 - 12:15 am Leave a comment.

Talk about not living up to the hype. What a boring week at the Winter Meetings.

Where were all the money-for-money deals with the bad economy? Where was the blockbuster trade for Roy Halladay? And where, oh where, was the ‘Milton the Meltdown’ trade?

All we got was the three-way Granderson deal to New York, which is just wonderful. I mean, who doesn’t want to see another All Star suiting up in pinstripes? Grrr!

Milton Bradley Market

By bullpenbrian - December 10, 2009 - 2:00 am Leave a comment.

Who knows if there’s truly a market for Milton Bradley.

I mean seriously, why on earth would you want this guy on your club?

But good for Jim Hendry if he’s stirring the pot to generate more interest anyway.

Milton Bradley Heading West?

By bullpenbrian - December 9, 2009 - 12:15 am 2 comments.

Disappointing to see the Cubs miss out on Granderson.

Of course, I have no idea how much the Cubs were involved in the trade talks, but with all the moving parts of a seven-player trade, I thought the Cubs had enough talent to be involved.

It’s not devastating news, but obviously Granderson would have been a tremendous fit to roam center field at Wrigley.

On the other hand, Granderson’s arrival in N.Y. likely increases the availability of Melky Cabrera. No reason Hendry shouldn’t give the kid a look, either. He’s a young 24-year-old with upside.

Andre Dawson Hall of Famer

By bullpenbrian - December 8, 2009 - 1:15 am 4 comments.

Picking Hall of Famers isn’t as difficult as the writers make it out to be.

To me it’s a black or white issue, either the guy was one of the best during his era or he wasn’t.

If a player falls in the grey area I probably don’t vote for him.

And if he’s a noted steroids user he’s out of luck, too.

Milton Bradley For Jose Guillen?

By bullpenbrian - December 7, 2009 - 1:00 am Leave a comment.

Winter Meetings get underway this afternoon through Thursday.

Obviously, Hendry’s one goal is trading ‘Milton the Terrible.’

I’d say forget about the Rays and the Rangers for the time being, teams which are unlikely to pay for Bradley anyway, and go after someone like Jose Guillen in Kansas City, which is a possibility according to SI’s Jon Heyman.

Jose is no saint, of course, but his numbers are legit and the guy can still play solid defense. And, if you get a full season out of him at little ol’ Wrigley Field, we’re talkin’ 30-plus home runs and 110-plus RBI.

Jake Fox, Aaron Miles Traded to A’s

By bullpenbrian - December 4, 2009 - 1:00 am 3 comments.

Jake Fox will be an All Star with Oakland. I really believe he’s that kind of player.

With the chance to play everyday, especially given the DH role, I see Fox hitting 25 HR and driving in 90-plus RBI.

Strangely, the Cubs never had a place for Fox to play, which makes little sense for a player of his talents. And for that I fault Jim Hendry.

When you hand out bad contracts the likes of Soriano, Bradley and Miles, that’s how you end up with potential All Stars like Fox on the trading block.
