Derrek Lee Contract

By bullpenbrian at 02.24.2010 1 comment.

Derrek Lee’s contract runs dry at the end of this season, which is a positive omen for the first baseman and Cubs fans.

Credit human nature, but we’re all more focused when money is on the line, especially pro ballplayers who are positioned to earn millions.

Question is, should the Cubs resign Lee who turns 34 in September?

Eliminate his 2006 season, when he suffered a broken wrist and missed 59 games, and the guy’s averaged 153 games played per season with the Cubs.

And in six total season spent with Chicago he’s smashed 163 HR, driven in 518 RBI and become the quite leader of the Cubs’ clubhouse. Not to mention his two Gold Glove Awards won in 2005 & 2007.

Lee is certainly over-shadowed by the likes of Zambrano, Soriano and Ramirez. But lose D-Lee and you’re losing a lot.

My guess is the Cubs will resign Lee. Given Jim Hendry’s history it’ll be a three-year deal, too.

Maybe you think otherwise? Respond!

I hope they resign Lee, He’s my favorite player. I will be ticked if he’s not resigned, he’s one of the best first basemen in the league, resign him. Last year, [2009 season] he was the Cubs best player. No reason to not resign. Lee doesn’t think he will be resigned, I sure hope he does.
