Cubs Should Trade For Matt Garza

By bullpenbrian at 12.14.2010 Leave a comment.

I’d be willing to part with prospects to land Matt Garza in a trade. The Rays have made the 27-year-old available, and the Cubs need more starting pitching.

Garza is a decent starter, a legit No.3. His talent, however, isn’t worthy of one of the Cubs’ top prospects including Tyler Colvin, Starlin Castro or Andrew Cashner.

With Tampa Bay looking to cut payroll, a package of ‘close’ to major league ready prospects seems likely to complete a deal. And Chicago can offer more than a handful of youngsters that fit the bill.

Obviously, such a trade weakens the Cubs’ farm system, but it’s also another step in the right direction for 2011–a season in which the Cubs are a few small moves from competing.

Signing the veteran Carlos Pena is a clear indication Jim Hendry is not rebuilding the roster with younger talent in the near future.

The Cubs have the talent to win now. The Ricketts need to win now. Matt Garza, a 15-game winner pitching in the AL East, can help them win now.
