Carlos Pena Good Fit For Cubs

By bullpenbrian - December 8, 2010 - 12:01 am Leave a comment.

I believe signing Carlos Pena is a good move for the Cubs.
He’s exactly what the Cubs are looking for at first base: good glove and a left-handed stick with power.

Jim Hendry’s To-Do List

By bullpenbrian - December 7, 2010 - 12:01 am Leave a comment.

Jim Hendry has a short, but important, to-do list this week at the Winter Meetings.

If Hendry completes his list, the Cubs have a good chance to contend in the Central. If not, it’s likely the Cubs stay positioned behind Cincy, St. Louis and Milwaukee.

RIP – Ron Santo (1940-2010)

By bullpenbrian - December 4, 2010 - 12:01 am Leave a comment.

My heart just ached this morning with the sad news of Ron Santo’s death.

I smiled, however, remembering how many times Santo made me laugh, and by how excited he would get during the broadcasts.

Santo was never a Hall of Famer by broadcasting standards, but his credentials as a player are certainly worthy, despite the writers’ refusal to elect him.

It’s a damn shame that if he does get enshrined he won’t be here to accept the honor, which is an awful injustice that falls squarly on the shoulders of the voting baseball writers and Veterans committee who failed to vote him in on 19 occasions.

I feel for Pat Huges, too, who worked in the broadcast booth with Santo since 1996. I can’t imagine the sadness he’ll feel in the booth during the coming seasons without Ron by his side.

In honor of Ron I’m posting his retired No.10 jersey in my sidebar throughout the 2011 season. I hope the Cubs do something similar, and believe they will, by honoring Santo with a sleeve patch on the Cubs jerseys for the 2011 campaign.

Bullpen Session – No Words

By bullpenbrian - December 2, 2010 - 12:01 am Leave a comment.

The Bullpen Session is a weekly round-up of my observations surrounding Cubs baseball and much, much more!

This session I’m covering topics over the last two weeks since I opted for Thanksgiving jokes last Thursday.

Speaking of which, I think the best Thanksgiving tradition is eating left over pecan pie for breakfast on Friday–not leftover turkey sandwiches.

–Dusty Baker deserved the NL Manager of the Year Award, not Bud Black.

Theriot The New Jack Parkman

By bullpenbrian - December 1, 2010 - 12:01 am Leave a comment.

When I saw the Dodgers traded Ryan Theriot to the Cardinals I immediately thought of Jack Parkman, the superstar catcher for the Cleveland Indians in Major League II.

The strapping Parkman, and his patented butt-wiggle while digging into the batter’s box, was the sensation of Cleveland’s female fans. But the love affair ends after Parkman is dealt to the rival White Sox during the season.

And here now stands Theriot, the once wildly popular sex symbol of the Chicago Cubs, playing for the arch-rival Cards.

Can’t wait for Pat Hughes to channel his inner Harry Doyle and point out that “the women in Chicago can’t stand this guy!”

Theriot is 4-for-4 against the Cubs today--four goddamn hits!
