Cubs’ Best Option At 2B?

By bullpenbrian at 03.22.2011 1 comment.

A meeting between Mike Quade and Jim Hendry today will likely determine who will start at second base for the Cubs: Jeff Baker, Blake DeWitt, Darwin Barney or a combination of two of the three. Here’s a snapshot of the three candidates.

-Blake DeWitt
Traded from the Dodgers to the Cubs for Ted Lilly.
In 53 games with Chicago hit .250 with 4 HR & 22 RBI.
However, DeWitt hit worse with the Cubs than he did with L.A.
His defensive versatility is a bigger plus than his actual fielding.
Although a left-handed bat, he’s not an ideal leadoff man.

-Jeff Baker
Acquired in 2009 from Colorado.
Can also play first, third and some corner outfield.
Has excelled against lefties with a career OPS of .908.
However, he drew just 16 walks in 206 at-bats in 2010.
Also lacks speed of a typical leadoff man.
Average defensively at second base.

-Darwin Barney
The dark horse of this race.
Made his MLB debut with Cubs in August.
He’s a light hitter at best.
However, his glove work at second, third & short is above par.
Made just two errors in 85 innings in 2010.
Also not an ideal leadoff hitter.
