Cubs On Pace For NL’s Worst Record

The Cubs played so poorly on Memorial Day they made Houston, owners of the worst record in the NL (20-34), look good.

But that’s been the calling card of late for the Cubs, and one that’s putting them on the path to soon join Houston at the basement of the National League.

Prior to Monday’s 12-7 win against Chicago, the Astros’ season-high for runs scored was seven. On Monday, however, the ‘Stros pounded out 16-hits, nine for extra-base, four of which were home runs.

Rewind to Saturday where Pirates starter Paul Maholm entered the game (1-7). He subsequently shutout the Cubs tossing a complete game three-hitter. Meanwhile, the Peg Legs’ offense backed Maholm with four more home runs.

Wasn’t any prettier on Friday, either. Kevin Correia paced Pittsburgh though 7.1 scoreless innings en route to a 4-2 win. And despite the Pirates’ 2-for-15 mark with RISP, the Cubs couldn’t score until the ninth when the game was all but over.

And so the beat goes on for Chicago…its sporadic pitching, hitting and fielding placing them on the verge of owning the NL’s worst record come early June.

Boy, oh boy, how quickly it’s all gone wrong on the North Side.
