Lots of question marks surrounding Albert Pujols’ broken left wrist.
How will it change Albert’s contract negotiations? Will he return to his old form? Can he still break Bonds’ career home run record?
I’m immediately reminded of Derrek Lee suffering a broken wrist during the 2006 season.
Some will argue Lee never fully rebounded after fracturing his wrist on a similar play to Pujols’ injury–colliding with a base runner at first base.
At the time Lee was the reigning NL Batting Champion with monster power and a knack for hitting in the clutch.
But it took Lee three seasons to even come close to reproducing his 2005 campaign of 46 HR & 107 RBI–He hit 35 HR and drove in 111 in 2009.
Otherwise, Lee remained a good player following his injury, especially defensively, but never quite appeared his old All Star self at the plate.
That’s saying a lot for a guy who continued to hit for a solid average and a decent amount of RBI through his Cubs tenure. But how much Lee’s wrist injury fully attributed to his offensive decline is debatable.
So I ask you, will the same hold true for Pujols?
