Ugly Weekend For the Cubs?

By bullpenbrian at 08.26.2011 1 comment.

Could be an ugly weekend for the Cubs as they’re set to face the red-hot Brewers in Milwaukee.

The Brewers own the best home winning-percentage in the majors (.746) thanks to a 47-16 record at Miller Park…which includes an 18-3 mark over its last 21 home games, and 16-4-0 series record overall.

It’s also been the driving force behind Milwaukee’s ascension to the top of the NL Central over the past four weeks as they’ve gone 18-5 during the month of August.

Trailing both Pittsburgh and St. Louis by 0.5 games one month ago, the Brewers have since opened up a 9.5 games lead over the Cardinals and a whopping 16 games lead over Pitt, lowering the Brewers’ Magic No. to 22.

Granted, not all of those victories came at home. But the Brewers have also improved away from Miller Park going 9-3 over its past 12 road contests following a 16-31 road mark to start the season.

Not surprisingly, starting pitching has been the difference maker, home & away, for Milwaukee during the season’s second half. The Cubs will see it first hand this weekend facing the heart of the rotation.

Friday: Randy Wolf (10-8) 3.45 ERA
Saturday: Yovani Gallardo (14-8) 3.51 ERA
Sunday: Zack Greinke (12-5) 4.22 ERA

That doesn’t bode well for a Chicago team that’s already dropped five of six in Milwaukee this season and continues to struggle hitting with RISP, or for the fact the Cubs are 12-47 when scoring less than three runs.

Could be a very tough weekend for the Cubs, indeed.
