Favorite Cubs Now Former Cubs

By bullpenbrian at 02.03.2012 4 comments.

It recently occurred to me that all my favorite Cubs players are now former Cubs players.

Aramis moved north to Milwaukee.  Pena returned south to the Rays. Ted Lilly is still with L.A.. Derrek Lee is straddling the line of retirement, Jim Edmonds is already there.  Not to mention, no more De-Ro, Sweet Lou or Ryno for that matter.

So the question becomes, who is my favorite current Cub?

My answer: the funny man from north of the boarder, Ryan Dempster, who I’ve long been a fan of for all he does both on and off the field.

Who’s your No.1 Cub?

  1. Wood and Dempster and my two favorites right now. I miss D.Lee a lot too. I won’t buy jerseys of current players any more because of this. Instead, I have Dawson, Sandberg, Santo and Banks.

Love me some Kerry Wood, for sure. Surprised, however, D-Lee remains a FA this offseason. I figured he would be signed by now. Starting to wonder if he’ll call it a career–or if MLB will decide that for him?

Good point about the jerseys. I don’t have an individual player’s uni myself, but I like the idea of going old school. Smart money, right!

Reed Johnson is my favorite current Cub… that kid gets dirty in every game, and I say ‘kid’ becasue he plays like a kid and is fun to watch. I too have been burned by buying a Cub jersey just to have that player traded off the next season. I’ll stick with my autographed Santo jersey, still my all time favorite player past or present.

I’ve always liked Reed because of his effort and professionalism. Doesn’t have tons of talent, but he plays the right way, has plenty of baseball smarts and leadership.

I need to get a Cubs jersey, too.

Signed Santo jersey is hard to top :)
