Barney Bouncing Back With Bat

I had my concerns with Darwin Barney’s stamina heading into the season.

After hitting well over .300 during the season’s first half in 2011, Barney slumped terribly in late August through the finish line hitting .208 over the final 30 games.

It seemed the rigors of a full major league season and advanced scouting took its toll on the young rookie second baseman in his 143 games played.

After a slow start this year, Barney has bounced back to being a productive hitter, especially lately.

His 2-R walk-off HR vs. San Diego last Wednesday wrapped up a 5-for-10 homestand against the Padres.

He then stretched his hitting-streak to five-games while matching a season-high three hits against San Francisco during the first game of the current road trip on Friday.

Barney went hitless on Saturday snapping the hitting-streak, but he’s 6-for-20 during the road trip with two walks, one run & one RBI–not shabby for an eight-hole hitter.

Better yet, he has a team-leading 13 doubles and nine 2-out RBI. He also ranks second in runs scored (24), second in triples (2) and third in extra-base hits (18).

It’s all very promising, but the question remains: can Barney keep it up for an entire season?
