At least that’s the gist of the paper’s spring training roundup, although, the Cubs did receive a ‘B’ grade for their offseason moves.
The good news, however, is despite the low expectations for 2013, we know the organization is making strides under the surface to improve the team over the next several seasons.
Of course those happenings won’t translate into a winning record for another 2 or 3 more years, which, in the meantime, leaves us debating whether or not the Cubs can avoid another 100-loss season (I’m guessing 90).
But last year’s debacle of a campaign served as a sobering reminder of how far the Cubs need to climb out of the gutter – and it’s still a long way to top before the Cubs can rock-n-roll.
So for the purpose of a general, preseason thumbnail sketch of the Cubs, sure, it should stay ugly on the North Side this summer. But maybe next year the Cubs will have built a little something from nothing.
